Mom Brain

This morning during the normal ‘get the kids ready and out-the-door’ routine, I threw a plate in the trash and the napkin in the sink.  Whoopsie daisy.  Fast forward 45 seconds and I put a can of cat food in the cats water bowl – that was full of water.  Possibly a whole 3 minutes later, I put clothes in the dryer (yay me, right!?) – only to pull them out of the dryer an hour later, noting that I never turned the dryer ON.  I’ve walked into the kitchen a hundred times forgetting why I was there, I’ve picked up my phone to text someone back and ended up buying paper towels on Amazon, I’ve literally left a loaf of bread in my child’s crib – NO.  CLUE.  I heard people talk about mom brain before I had kids and thought – yeah you are moving in a lot of different directions – but OH MY GOSH – I never thought I’d get , well, here.

After some clicking around on the WWW – I started to feel less concerned that I was going nuts.  According to research done by Psychology Today, a woman’s brain does change after she gives birth for the first time.  The article goes on to describe a LOT of what I experience on a daily basis.  For example, bring overly emotional.  I was an overly emotional person BEFORE I had kids – so if you happen to see my husband hitchhiking on the side of the highway, maybe pick him up and go grab a beer.  Secondly, evidence did point to some hormonal changes that could affect our memories.  SEE!  I knew I wasn’t crazy.  I am only crazy-adjacent 🙂

The word I hear most from Mom’s is “juggling”.  How do we juggle it all?  How do we juggle time for the kids, work, significant other, ourselves…?  I have friends who are super organized with charts and schedules and cubbies for all things, I have other friends who have folks to help keep the everyday tasks up-to-date, I have friends who totally wing-it (I fall most into this category).

Me?  I am the Queen-Of-The-Sticky-Note.  If it is not on a sticky note, it will not get done.  Period.  Full stop.  In order to give myself the giggles and remember I can ONLY DO SO MUCH, I tend to switch up my sticky note selections.  I am currently using these –

I have a colleague with 5 kids (FIVE KIDS) who swears by Evernote (https://evernote.com/).  She cannot, cannot live without it.  It’s also FREE for the Basic version so you can take it for a spin if you likey!  I have to say, she never misses ANYthing and we got her Christmas card, family photo and all, before Thanksgiving.  WUT?  Check it out.  Let me know if you become a die-hard and I will intro you to her so you can fan rage about Evernote.

Another dear friend has TRIPLETS.  They are 5.  (Triplets you guys….5 year-old triplets….let that sink in for a wee moment…good?  OK, moving on).  If you need a custom made (and by “custom” I mean designed with duct tape and a hack saw by her husband) baby gate, she is the hook-up.  These things were inescapable.  Until they weren’t :/  You can only contain the littles for so long before they discover “climbing” and “teamwork”.  **sigh**  BUT, baby gates give you time to do SOMEthing without worrying if your tiny human is confiscating items – like permanent markers, nail polish, gum, and/or spreading an entire bag of Cheerios onto the couch – hypothetically speaking OF COURSE.  We used all manner of baby gates but found this one to be great as we had a variety of openings to work with and you can use one hand to open and close (MOMS – DO NOT climb over the baby gate…you might make it just fine 2 or 3 times…the 4th time it’s a yard sale of anything you were carrying as your foot dangles atop the gate…):

Please use the comments section to offer advice and your proven MUST HAVES to all the rest of us Mommas!  We’ve all had an experience or two (or three, or four…) that, when shared, can save a lot of time, money and bleach.

  1. […] I hope one of these sleep tips works for you and helps you get some quality shut-eye. Even if you get a wink here and a nap there – best to have GOOD sleep when you can get it! And these tips also work if you’re suffering from a little bit of “Mom Brain”. […]
